‘You’re All My Favourites’ – Self Portrait Film – August 2019

This was a hard one for me, as I am a million times more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it. BUT, I am always telling my clients that they need to be in photographs with their children and so I can’t really make excuses not to do the same! The ‘Filming Life Academy’, where I’ve trained in film-making, have also been running a Self Portrait challenge over the last couple of months and this prompted a little niggle in my head that I should put aside my fears and give it a go!

We made this film on the common near Ashridge, Berkhamsted, on one of the last properly warm days of the summer. I’ve photographed my children there lots of times and knew that the light would be lovely as the sun went down. It’s also a fairly quiet and open space so ideal for them to run around. They played hide and seek and chased bubbles, and then I handed the camera over to my husband, who very patiently tried to make sense of my garbled directions.

There are inevitably things that I wish I’d done a bit differently and it definitely felt funny editing footage of myself! But I am embracing the imperfections and am still glad that I took the time to make this. I hope that when our children watch it in years to come they will be glad to see a glimpse of me.

And if you’ve watched this and are thinking that you’d love to have something similar made for you and your family then do get in touch. We can go somewhere pretty or just hang out at your home (and that honestly doesn’t need to be perfect either!) I promise it will be worth it!
